Kalaba Kadhalan is a 1983 Tamil movie starring Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, and Sulakshana. It has been said by many reviewers on internet that this is one of the best movies ever made in the history of Tamil Cinema for its acting, scripting, and cinematography. The story revolves around Sundar (played by Rajnikanth), who goes to Chennai from Kalaba village to pursue his dreams as a singer but ends up as a lowly-paid worker in an advertising company. He falls in love with Meena (played by Sulakshana) but her father objects to their marriage because Sundar lives at rented accommodation and earns only Rs 100 per month. He agrees to meet Sundar again after he saves the life of his boss. After this incident, Sundar's family gets into trouble because they are unable to pay for his sister's wedding dowry that is 2400 rupees. Meena takes pity on Sundar and offers him to use her house in return for marriage. Sulakshana played Meena, a fashion designer who had left her father's home in Palghat to pursue her fashion designing career in the capital. She also wanted to have a better understanding of life and people before she got married and living with Sundar would help her with that objective. Kamal Haasan played the role of Sundar's colleague in the office. He was in love with Meena, but she did not return his affections for reasons not made clear in the movie. Sarath Babu played Sundar's father. He is a full-time farmer who wants to see his son married into another farmer's family so that they can have a bigger farm. His mother is always praying to God for Sundar to get married because every month he gives them some money to help reduce their farm debts. This movie appeals to the masses. A simple man gets a hard knock in the city and his dreams are shattered. A rich man who has it all fails to understand the value of family. The rich woman who has everything struggles to find meaning in life, and a poor man finds happiness by simply being a decent human being For Rajnikanth, this was one of his defining roles as an actor. Here he plays a good-hearted everyman with such sincerity, conviction and sensitivity that it is impossible not to empathise with him. He always keeps his head down and works hard to achieve his goals with little concern for the world around him until he is forced to face heart-breaking disappointment at every turn. The dialogues and screenplay by Kamal Haasan and Jayaraj and the songs and background score written by Deva Kavi is to be admired. Deva Kavi's song "Oru Vageesa Manithan" written as a duet with P.Susheela is to be noted as one of the best lyrics ever penned for a song in Tamil cinema. The film has been remade as Burra (1985) by Raaj Kamal in Hindi language starring Rajinikanth, Aamir Khan, Rati Agnihotri, Sunil Shetty and Amrish Puri along with an Indian cast. 8eeb4e9f32 53
